As I read, I found my reading interrupted by the image in my mind of a man crushed under rocks. I felt that the image was a simple, yet powerful metaphor to describe the crushing weight that I felt figuratively. - ["Weary"](https://bulletsandbandaids.org/merch/21035/) - James Sisk 16” x 12” • Acrylic and Oil on Canvas Everyone who’s ever served in uniform is all-too-familiar with long hours of arduous work to the point of sheer exhaustion. Excessive exertion and lack of sleep takes its toll on anyone; but add the emotional and adrenaline-charged environment of combat- the weariness only grows deeper. The figure in this piece represents the overwhelming exhaustion that can come from just a few hours of incredible adversity. He’s engulfed in a surreal environment of bloodshed and anguish illustrated by a hazy background and choice of color. His personal pain indelibly connected to it. James Sisk, MAJ, US Army (ret) - ["Memento"](https://bulletsandbandaids.org/merch/21034/) - Ashley Warthen 24” x 12” • Mixed Media on paper What struck me most about Ruben Jager’s story from his youth – the image that lingered in my head – was the contrast between the life and color of nature as he roamed through the French wilderness toward the mountains, with vibrant visions of swallowtails and lavender fields, versus the dark, gray chalky remnants of history that almost quite literally crumbled between his fingers. Blending media like the textured, dry charcoals and charcoal powder with more vibrant acrylic inks and water was necessary to illustrate that the beauty of life as we know it has only grown out of those ruins. Flowers can root through the ashes and become beautiful again. And in that moment of realization, as the ancestors keep an eye on him from a distance, while holding the remnants of a skull too small to make sense, a young man became a blend of a memory of a horrific past and a symbol of hope for a brighter future. Ashley Warthen is a portrait artist, arts librarian and published illustrator from Columbia, SC who is known for her splashy, vibrant acrylic ink paintings of animals and people. Ashley enjoys mixing media and trying new techniques, which allows her style to evolve naturally. Though her figurative work often explores aspects of the female experience, she is drawn to storytelling through the art of picture books for children. - ["Minefield"](https://bulletsandbandaids.org/merch/21032/) - Ginny Merett 12” x 36” • Multimedia Analog Collage I’m honored to participate in the Bullets and Bandaids exhibit this year. I’m doing so in honor of my dad and uncle’s memory and for their service to our country. I created this piece after reading the story of a Marine who served in Afghanistan as an officer. It wasn’t easy reading this story or making this piece, and I certainly feel like I didn’t do his story true justice, but my intention was to show his dedication to leadership under terrible circumstances. This multimedia collage was made with photocopies, acrylic paint, and photo skins. I repeated shapes and content to represent patterns in war as referred to by the veteran whose story I depicted, and to emphasize the casualties of war. And I referenced the Marine Corps traits and principles of leadership using text. - ["Chosen Ones"](https://bulletsandbandaids.org/merch/21031/) - Susan Lenz 19” x 23” • Mixed Media This piece was created to confront viewers with this question: Who really are the “Chosen Ones”? - ["Not Forgotten"](https://bulletsandbandaids.org/merch/21030/) - Beth Sellers 12” x 18” • Felt The story of Bertrand is full of depth, feeling and sorrow, but the last 2 words were the ones that summed the whole piece for me -’Not Forgotten’. Thunder road, misty skies, thunderous clouds are the background scenes, but ‘Not Forgotten’ touched me and I really wanted to bring that forward to honor everyone in the military. Sacrifices by some, the luck of making a small maneuver by others makes you realize that things can change in just an instant. - [Exploding All Boundaries; Expanding Opportunities](https://bulletsandbandaids.org/merch/21013/) - Ida Mae Irby 24” x 12” • Acrylic on Canvas This painting is inspired by a female marine who served as an artillery sergeant in the Marine Corps. Camouflage is an element of disguise, while a portrait highlights unique features. Here the female patriot is highlighted and distorted. She blends into the military culture, but one cannot ignore her unique individuality. Fine art has adjusted to technological augmentation, which is an essential tool for telling the history of our nation. Many public interfaces involve the creation of an interface between the human and technology. New ideas, symbols, values, perceptions, and beliefs are shared through digital rapid public communication. Today the aesthetics of digital art cannot be separated from its social and political context. These multidisciplinary methods can be seen in my illustrations and paintings. - [Untitled](https://bulletsandbandaids.org/merch/21006/) - Jennifer Emswiler 15” x 20” • Acrylic on Canvas After reading what Brian wrote about his experiences concerning the unfortunate side effects of Mefloquine, the drug used for Malaria prevention, I felt the issues were invasive and overpowering, much like a kudzu vine. Introduced in the US as erosion prevention, kudzu quickly became an invasive species that causes destruction to whatever it grows near. As it thrives, all else around it is deprived of what it needs. Like Kudzu, Mefloquine can potentially have side effects that could impact the overall mental health and well-being of a person. The horrors of war and the lack of needed support can truly add fuel to the already raging fire within. It is our turn to actually support our troops by listening and trying to be a part of the changes that need to happen. - ["Behind You"](https://bulletsandbandaids.org/merch/21014/) - Zachary Diaz 20” x 24” • Graphite on Paper My work is a constant reinterpretation of life’s experiences. I create large graphite and charcoal drawings on paper, and oil paintings on canvas and linen that use symbols, figures, and cloudy atmospheres to convey an emotion, a memory, or an idea. My art is process driven; inspired first by writings in my diary, then sketched briefly before progressing to a larger format. I believe artists are gardeners; we create roses from the recycled parts of life. In my attempt to connect with viewers, I encourage their curiosity by creating compositions with hidden symbols throughout each piece. Some of these symbols connect present and past work, which illustrates my belief that life is one interconnected story, and we all play a small part in everyone else’s. Solidarity is not just a beautiful idea, but a meaningful pursuit; one in which we subconsciously take part in every day. ABOUT MY ENTRY While creating this piece for Bullets and Bandaids, I chuckled while reading the beautifully illustrated memory. Imagine thinking you know a person, only to have them surprise you; surprise you in a way that they warned you about months prior. I chose the moments of Doc’s pursuit, while the main character was silently making rounds. Hand on his weapon, focus on his mission, while his friend was focused on him. I can’t picture the experience and anxiety that war brings... but I know a good story when I come across it. - [Bullets and Bandaids logo stickers](https://bulletsandbandaids.org/merch/bubble-free-stickers-2/) - These stickers are printed on durable, high opacity adhesive vinyl which makes them perfect for regular use, as well as for covering other stickers or paint. Like any artist, I wasnt the viewer to feel the emotion behind the painting, not just see a pretty picture. I am stimulated by interesting composition, structure, and color usage when contemplating a painting. However, emotion is really what drives me. - [Hope](https://bulletsandbandaids.org/merch/21027/) - Joseph Berliner 16” x 22” • Oil on Canvas The world is evolving at an increasingly rapid pace and I strive to allow my work to parallel that change. “Emotionalist” is the term I like to use when defining myself as an artist. If I am capable of drawing some sense or feeling from the viewer, I consider my endeavor successful. - [When The Cork Pops](https://bulletsandbandaids.org/merch/21028/) - Sophie Angela 18” x 18” • Ink and Watercolor on paper As a young artist I am experimenting with my material boundaries, exploring different mediums according to thematic concepts. Through my artworks I like to explore what life means to me, both personally and at large. I believe that by going inward and studying those around me I can find universality. Because of this I gravitate towards the human form, depicting faces in seeming neutrality to capture the subtleties of human emotion. I hope to allow my viewer to project themselves onto these characters and question their purpose. In my ink and watercolor works I apply my semi-realist approach to draw patchworks of bodies, forms, and material objects to create what I like to call “artificial still-lifes.” These capture aspects of identity through direct representation or through symbolic objects. Every fabricated composition of mine is an exercise and expression of life itself, a beauty that I believe can only exist with the presence of mortality and decay. - [Keep Me True](https://bulletsandbandaids.org/merch/21026/) - Shelby LeBlanc 36” x 48” • Acrylic and Paper Mixed Media When you first see this painting its easy to think it just represents American patriotism and freedom... But “Keep Me True” is meant to pay homage to the life of Lee McClay. It is made up strips of photographs, maps, and interview transcripts from a man who was an eagle scout and marine and now lives in Wisconsin as a civilian. The eagle represents his life before his service as an eagle scout and his time as a marine. The paper media was deconstructed to depict how memories change over time as they get distorted, opinions of those events alter as we age or as time passes, or they are simply forgotten. However, all these memories and experiences shape us as individuals when they are pieced together. Keep Me True also highlights how certain aspects of our past alter the way we see ourselves and how others see us in the world. They become more prominent, they can open doors and close others, but they seem to shape the direction life goes moving forward. I wanted this painting to represent his life outside of his service as well which is why I chose to paint the blue background; it was one of his and his wife’s wedding colors. - [Untitled](https://bulletsandbandaids.org/merch/21012/) - Sharon Funderburk 12” x 12” • Mixed Media on Canvas To begin my past influenced my styles. I am somewhat of a loner. My childhood Was filled with isolation. As a child I collected rocks, dug mud out of the clay pits Next to my house. When I create it seems to get stuck in my brain and will not let me rest until it is released and escapes thru my hands like poetry. That is why I am a mixed media artist. Originally, I grew up outside Phila, Pa. and moved south in the late 1970’s I went to school for Commercial art. And worked at a graphic art company doing maps and drafting work. My grandmother was my greatest influence. She was the greatest artist I knew. Her hands could make anything out of trash. The mixed media bug is in my blood. The third of three siblings, I was the creative in the mix. Art was and still is my constant companion. A product of the Baby Boomer generation, I lived through the Viet Nam era and watched that conflict splash across the TV screen nearly every night back when the journalists were on the ground filming alongside the troops. It was a time of protests, hippies and amazing music. At Ohio University I met several veterans returning from Nam and it was clear that the transition to college life was a huge challenge. One of these is a very dear friend to this day. I graduated with a degree in Studio Arts, married a very creative man, bore and raised two girls, worked in various creative positions, went back to school, became an Art teacher and then began my mural and trompe l’oiel painting career. My art defies categories. Through painting my clients dreams and visions, I discovered inherent capabilities beyond what I thought possible. “Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.” ~ Edward Degas My life has been one of many blessings and constant evolution as regards my art as well as my spiritual beliefs. Synchronicity is everywhere. This leads me to this project. It is very unlike my usual style and came out of nowhere. Then I was approached to contribute to Bullets and Bandaids. No brainer. My heart goes out to all who have suffered, endured, sacrificed, and lost. We are all human no matter our experience in this life. We are all one. - [Storm](https://bulletsandbandaids.org/merch/21017/) - Lucas Sams 24” x 18” • Mixed Media on Canvas When tasked with creating something based on Heath Smith’s “Clash in the Desert,” I was taken by the image of a sandstorm. I chose to paint the Storm to distill a feeling of an experience very far from my own. Like a sandstorm, an undertaking that is big and overwhelming, and potentially full of great peril. In the sky, beyond the horizon, a star or heavenly body offers guidance and protection through the trials and tribulations of the oncoming front. - [The Butterfly Effect](https://bulletsandbandaids.org/merch/21019/) - Lauren Chapman 26” x 40” • Framed Mixed Media on Paper Ida was a junior soldier and photojournalist for the military. She joined in 2009 in order to find job security and work on paying off her student loans. At the age thirty she was able to pay off thirty thousand dollars of her debt. She was active five years and three years in the reserves. She spent eight years photographing soldiers and writing for the local news. She used her creativity to enhance her experience, “I loved photographing them training because I would just ride with the craziest soldiers and take pictures of them jumping out of humvees with the rifle in their hands and that’s always fun when you have like little kids trying to pretend the GI Joe training in the army.” Ida spent one year in Afghanistan, which sounded like a chilling experience. There seemed to be so much anxiety being on base and seeing soldiers leave in humvees and not make it back alive. Ida told herself, “This is what I have to do, and I’m going to make the best of it.” Ida is passionate about equal rights for women in the military, “Female veterans are very unique because the military wasn’t built for them. They have redefined the landscape of the military and I do think that our country, our military, the life of service members, is better because women who served demanded to be just considered like me in every way. I feel like that consideration has ripped the initial essence of what It means to be a soldier and destroyed it, women want equality.” Reading Ida Mae’s interview for Bullets and bandaids was eye opening. I loved how honest and humble Ida was retelling her experiences and now I feel a connection to her. Ida and I have a lot in common so I felt from the beginning it was the perfect match for me since my work is primarily inspired by female stories. She calls herself a horrible soldier who didn’t deal well with leadership. I found this interesting since she is an artist who now has a masters in painting. It was so cool reading what it was like being in such an authoritarian experience from the perspective of a creative person. Ida mentioned the butterfly effect and how women are adapting and overcoming in the military. For her piece I painted Ida in the middle of an Afghanistan inspired base. She holds her camera up pointed towards young women playing with military toys. The girls on each side represent the change happening currently in the military as women are aspiring more and more to serve their country. The butterflies represent Ida’s story. Her strength and growth as a veteran, an artist, and those she continues to inspire, myself included. Thank you Ida Mae for serving our country. - [Trying to Scrub It All Away](https://bulletsandbandaids.org/merch/21021/) - Kate Frost 36” x 24” • Painting and Drawing on Engraved Plaster The baggage and weight that veterans carry back home can restrain them from being free from their past. For years they can try to push back the many visions of pain, suffering, and violence they witnessed and endured. This work acts as a visual advocate for the voice of this veteran. It magnifies it through plaster and other techniques, in hope to raise awareness about what veterans face when returning home. - [Untitled](https://bulletsandbandaids.org/merch/21036/) - Samantha Edmiston 20” x 16” • Oil on Canvas - [Untitled](https://bulletsandbandaids.org/merch/21010/) - Holly Suchonel Rauch 16” x 16” • Acrylic on Canvas My journey with art began about 5 years ago as just a hobby, and now it is my passion! My medium of choice is acrylics and my style is mostly abstract. 100% of the proceeds from the sale of my works benefit the Lyssa Rauch Memorial Scholarship at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina. This scholarship is in memory of my beautiful daughter and who lost her battle with cancer in 2006 at the age of 20. The scholarship is awarded annually to deserving students in the Department of Theater and Dance and is funded entirely by private donations. I have decided to turn my passion for art into a way to financially support the scholarship. When an opportunity presented itself to help another very worthy organization - Bullets and Bandaids - I couldn’t pass it up. I was honored to be able to represent the story “Christmas Eve” and the poem “Combat Fairy” with unique interpretations through art. - [Combat Fairy](https://bulletsandbandaids.org/merch/21025/) - Holly Suchonel Rauch 16” x 16” • Acrylic on Canvas - [All We’re Missin’ is the Jury](https://bulletsandbandaids.org/merch/21042/) - Amy Brown 22.5” x 14” • Acrylic on Canvas - [Untitled](https://bulletsandbandaids.org/merch/21039/) - Ryan O’Sullivan 8” x 8” • Oil on Canvas - [Rank and File](https://bulletsandbandaids.org/merch/21007/) - Steve White 24” x 20” • Acrylic on Canvas More and more these days, the creative world is seeing an emergence of artists creating positive spaces and shapes that, in turn, cleverly carve out shapes in negative space intentionally. Negative space is, quite simply, the space that surrounds the subject in an image or painting. Just as important as that subject itself, negative space helps to define the boundaries of positive space and brings balance to a composition. My most recent painting, “Rank and File”, is a classic example of negative space use. Providing a place for the eye to rest, the striking white space matched with the beautiful, eccentric black make it, what I hope to be, an unforgettable execution of the technique. In “Rank and File”, the sleeve of the sailor in the foreground is decorated with a perched eagle over three chevrons, which indicates that he’s a Petty Officer First Class (E-6). As we move down the line of sailors, the faces appear to fade into obscurity as the rank of each sailor descends into a predictable need to know basis - All hands on deck! - [Vietnam Veterans Memorial Opening Day 1982](https://bulletsandbandaids.org/merch/21009/) - Caylin Paige Stansberry 12” x 16” • Acrylic paint, markers, and Varnish on Canvas Thank you, Craig Burnette for sharing your story with me. Thank you, Bullets and Band-Aids for creating such a wonderful network and project. For my painting I chose the Vietnam Memorial from Craig’s story. My Medium was acrylic paint, markers, and varnish. My objective was to focus in on the walls reflectiveness, the grief and complexity that the wall represents. I would like to note that I have never seen this monument in person. I have only seen it in pictures and through Craig’s story. I chose to keep the background in black, gray, white and metallic colors to express grief, time past, and keep true to the wall’s actual color. I chose to include the flag in the foreground in color to express honor and valor. I learned through Craig’s story that the names were not in alphabetical order, but in order of casualty. This made his role at the memorial, in 1982, very important to assist the grieving families. I used a black and white reference photo from the event in 1982, as well as the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund website to find the names of that spot. It posed a challenge to include the names as legibly as possible, but it was important for me to try. Thank you, again Craig for your story and your service to our country. It was so moving to read your story. I am honored to have participated in this project for Bullets and Band-Aids - [Mid Confronting the Goddess of Death](https://bulletsandbandaids.org/merch/21022/) - Robert Matheson 38.5” x 25” • Acrylic, Graphite, Charcoal, and Crayon on Canvas with a lighter Mid losing his best friend Randy is a powerful example of the sacrifice our service members and their family and friends endure every day. I was tempted to try and illustrate a cliche image of triumph over evil, but in my mind there is no sugar coating this experience. This is the reality of living in an era of war, especially for those thrust into the middle of it. Mid writes “This is my account of real life and it is all true. So use it as you will. Then try to find peace inside. Something I will never know and could care less.” I did not find peace with Mid’s story, but I do care deeply about it. I’ve done my best to honor Randy through the interpretation of these events. As Mid hovers in defiance of The Goddess of Death, she swirls, using his own words to entice him to join Randy. But Mid is the light. In as much, I’ve included a cigarette lighter with this painting and will not be offended if it burns in honor of Mid’s lost friend and patriot. So use it as you will. - [13 E](https://bulletsandbandaids.org/merch/21011/) - Anthony Lewis 30” x 40” • Mixed Media on Gallery Canvas Original Artwork, created for Bullets and Bandaids Vol. 3 (2021) Shipping: $100 flate rate, continental US (shipping insurance included) Anthony Lewis enjoys setting the tone in his abstract fiqurative pantings by the use of bold colors that express individuality, movement and the representation of life. The world that we live in needs more positivity and I believe that starts with each of us. In my work I choose subjects that are rich in positive healing energy. Using swirls of color and lively brush strokes I capture this energy onto canvas. Nature and live music are two of my favorite sources of this healing energy. Painting nature scenes in Plein Air gives me the special opportunity to connect directly with nature and literally paint what I am feeling and seeing at that moment. Live music is even more energetic. The reciprocal connection between musicians and their fans is like no other art form. My live paintings record this live experience in a way that you can see the music and feel the good vibes. My mission as an artist is to create pieces of art that people can connect with and instantly feel a positive vibe. When I read the Veteran’s interview for the first time, one thing that stood out to me was the story of soldiers passing out school supplies to children in bombed out school buildings. That contrast of relentless bombings and eager school kids was very interesting to me. At first I could not even read the remainder of the interview. I just kept getting visions of this painting and the contrast both visually and metaphorically. To me it could just as well be a contrast of peace & war, love &. hate, or good & evil. - [On the Side of the Righteous](https://bulletsandbandaids.org/merch/21004/) - Michaela Pilar Brown 10” x 12” • Paper and Repurposed Objects My installations, collage and photographs address issues attendant to the black body. I use nontraditional materials and their juxtaposition to each other, and or dissimilar objects to make statements about the body and its relationship to larger cultural themes of age, gender, race, sexuality, history, and violence. Recent studies of Black grief mine personal and familial histories through an archiving of objects and the personal mythologies associated with these objects. I explore the ritualized use of materials, objects, and architectural spaces, often queering their size, orientation or form to blur the line between memory, dream and experience, plotting the relationship between normative considerations of the body and its function within specified spaces and roles. - [PTSD Visibly](https://bulletsandbandaids.org/merch/21005/) - Cleaster Cotton 16” x 20” • Mixed Media Painting on Canvas “Life has been generous with trauma and tribulations. PTSD is no stranger to me.” Cleaster Cotton (2021) This three-toothed portrait is a marker for the indescribable, larger-than-life concept and cause of a combat veteran’s post trauma stress disorder, known as PTSD. The contrasts and textural noise within this composition represent the intrusive, invasive characteristics of PTSD. This painting was created to be a safe physical container where ‘you’ can witness, transform, transmute and defuse chaos. It serves to remind you to, “lay your burdens down.” - [Untitled](https://bulletsandbandaids.org/merch/21008/) - Ashley Berendzen-Russell 37” x 37” • Mixed media on Canvas I have always been interested in collaborations in art but also in other aspects in life. In my experience, collaborations, especially multidisciplinary, promote growth for all parties by getting individuals out of their own usual comfort zone and process of doing things. This requires each individual to get out of their own headspace and look from a press perspective at a subject or idea. It usually encourages empathy and research to gain knowledge on the subject so that each collaborator is on the same page. For this particular project I found myself doing research in all different aspects from policies, to period accurate material details and perspective from the time period. It made me think of the topic more deeply than I have before. Immersing myself in the situations of the Vietnam War. In turn, I have grown as a person and as an artist. My process began and went down a different path than I would normally take which helps me to learn and help shape my future ideas as a person and as an artist. Most of all, I have a deeper understanding and appreciation for what some other people go through helping to remind me that I am a very lucky and appreciative to have the freedom and opportunities that I do and I’m reminded to notice the sacrifices that some others make with their job choices and life choices. Someone has to do these jobs and I applaud those who do. Thank you to all of our men and women in jobs of public service. - [Untitled](https://bulletsandbandaids.org/merch/21015/) - David Sheldon 38” x 46” • Oil on Canvas After reading Gabriel Garcia’s moving piece about seeing the thousands of boots of fallen heroes from Afghanistan, I immediately knew the piece for me had to have a raw, grittiness of war to it, but also a feeling of light - of the light of all these souls who had sacrificed their lives for others. I decided to depict the boots as if they had just come off the feet of the soldier who owned them, rather have them polished-up for presentation. I wanted the boots to look like they had really been lived and died in. I decided to bring some of Gabriel’s actual words into the painting, as I felt that would add a feeling of personal story and sacrifice to the work. Finally, as mentioned, I chose to emphasize the strong presence of light as an embodiment of hope. - [They Don’t Make Them Like They Used To](https://bulletsandbandaids.org/merch/21018/) - Laura Garner Hine 16” x 20” • Oil and Gold Leaf of Canvas - [Caduceus](https://bulletsandbandaids.org/merch/21020/) - Morgan Shaley Renew 24” x 18” • Acrylic on Canvas Within this piece, I wanted to pay homage to Jake’s medical service, as well as his service to our country. Therefore I chose to portray an American soldier in anatomical position, wrapped in the snake and wings of a caduceus. I wanted these specific aspects of the painting to be in black and white to represent the mental hardships of both occupations. As for the patches the soldier bears on his chest, I wanted them to be colorful, proud, and commanding. I chose to place an American flag on the right side of his chest, and a Pride flag on the left over his heart as a symbol of strength in adversity. I was so honored to be able to listen to Jake’s story and creating this painting was truly a joy. I will remember this experience fondly for years to come. - [Untitled](https://bulletsandbandaids.org/merch/21024/) - Joseph Pearson 36” x 36” • Acrylic on Canvas Original Artwork, created for Bullets and Bandaids Vol. 3 (2021) Shipping: $100 flat rate, continental US (shipping insurance included) - [Gilded Chains](https://bulletsandbandaids.org/merch/21023/) - Rob Shaw 20” x 24” • Acrylic and Gold Leaf on Canvass This piece is about confinement. Having something inside of you that you need to get out but cannot find the proper outlet. I chose to use gold leaf and a monochromatic color scheme. The gold leaf has a prestigious quality to it, at the same time the reflectiveness lets it change under different lighting conditions. I chose the monochromatic color scheme for simplicity so as to not overwhelm the subject. My goal with this piece was to show that we’re all held back by certain things, the trick is to figure out how to overcome these obstacles. - [3/6 Kilo Company](https://bulletsandbandaids.org/merch/21029/) - Karl Zurfluh 33.5” x 33.5” • charcoal, acrylic and aerosol on board Original Artwork, created for Bullets and Bandaids Vol. 3 (2021) Shipping: $100 flat rate, continental US (shipping insurance included) This painting represents Peter Lindenthal’s story about his third tour in Afghanistan as a squad leader. It is a caught moment before he left his squad and his unexpected show of affection. The image goes beyond just that particular moment, it is a representation of the Marine Corp family. It shows that beyond the tough love, it is family first. The painting is oriented into a blue diamond shape and includes a white star in the background to represent the 3rd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment patch. The light (or the glow) symbolizes the good, and the loving bond between all people, present and past. - [Untitled](https://bulletsandbandaids.org/merch/21033/) - Will South 36” x 36” • Oil on Canvas Making art reminds me what a grain of sand—or less—I really am. Brush in hand, there’s this idea I should be going somewhere, that is, creating something. If working to get somewhere, anywhere, it sure would be nice to have a compass. Instead, there’s this knowledge that others have done all of this before and that I make art because others before me made it, here on this planet that is so impossibly inscrutable. I can ask myself: Well, what did all these past people achieve? A safer, more beautiful world, or one more cluttered with self-interest? It’s an impossible situation, standing before a canvas because I feel the grim weight of history, and, at the same time, feel the ongoing indifference of a universe so large that it, too, is impossible. Anything I could do in that moment of “now” feels miniscule or worse—unnecessary. And yet, somehow—I have no idea why—holding that brush feels like holding a lifeline, that I’m hanging on to something that matters, that someone is on the other end of this line, pulling me on. In that moment, I’m participating in something, putting in my tiniest of tiny two cents. I know we’re small, me and this canvas. But, for better and worse, we were part of it all, even if for just that moment. In the most infinitesimal of ways, painting feels like I touched the universe, and maybe that is the most one can do. - [Terra Incognito, Terra Firma](https://bulletsandbandaids.org/merch/21038/) - Melinda Fine 12” x 12” • Mixed Media on Canvas Concentrating on the themes of discovery and return, the moon phases indicate the month of traveling. The arm of the outstretched man depicts a reach for knowledge. A map of Lebanon, marked with an X is a treasure map guarded by the image of a man in late 19th/early 20th century dress. The femur, the largest and strongest bone in the human body indicates bone marrow–the very stuff of our genetic heritage. For me, birds are symbols of spirit and the falcon, a bird of prey, can be trained in falconry in which the bird returns to his handler with his quarry. - [Troops to Vietnam](https://bulletsandbandaids.org/merch/21041/) - Ron Hagell 30” x 11” • Acrylic and Paper Digital Images on Canvas - ["Intertwangled"](https://bulletsandbandaids.org/merch/bb23018/) - Inspired by the experiences of Kevin Brewer Gina Langston Brewer 26″ x 20″ • Acrylic on Canvas Board - [“Voices that Rose”](https://bulletsandbandaids.org/merch/bb23043/) - Inspired by the experiences of Tom Baker Sara Scott14″ x 10″ x 2.5″ • Stoneware Ceramics - ["Requiem of War"](https://bulletsandbandaids.org/merch/bb23017/) - Inspired by the experiences of Sergio Alarcon G.
